516 AROUCA - TAKING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TO NEW HEIGHTS
Urban regeneration project walks the walk
A footbridge perched above the Paiva River, the 516 Arouca Footbridge offers a new, sustainable way of travelling through the Portuguese countryside. Initially, the plan was to construct a bridge above a ground-level walking path, with boardwalk steps descending into the canyon. To pull it off, a team of mountain climbers was consulted for the bridge construction, which was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The suspension bridge is a tourist destination in itself, along with existing hiking trails and nature activities in the area.
