GERÊS-XURÉS DINAMIC - BIOSPHERES SUPPORT THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL ECOSYSTEM

The protection of biodiversity knows no borders. In this region, Portugal and Spain are working together to preserve both natural and cultural heritage for generations to come.

Transboundary preservation

The Gerês-Xurés Transboundary Biosphere Reserve is known for its epic mountainous landscape. The reserve's over 800 native and non-native species share the area with almost 70,000 locals who, for generations, have relied on a predominantly agriculture-based livelihood. GERÊS-XURÉS DINAMIC is raising awareness of the region's natural and cultural heritage in a way that engages and supports local and regional populations. This EU cross-border biosphere reserve project is committed to not only protecting the region from environmental degradation but also supporting a local economy that reinforces this preservation, particularly through geotourism.

Preserving green livelihoods

Afonso learns about the importance of biosphere reserves in Europe. At the Gerês-Xurés Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, he sees how conservation efforts go hand in hand with socioeconomic development and security.
